Dr. Scott D. Haley

Professor of Plant Breeding & Wheat Breeder

Soil and Crop Sciences Department
College of Agricultural Sciences
Colorado State University
Fort Collins, Colorado

Dr. Haley serves as project leader of the wheat breeding and genetics program. His research focuses on the genetic improvement of hard red and hard white winter wheat for yield, end-use quality, and biotic and abiotic stresses prevalent in Colorado and the central and southern Great Plains. His teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate level courses in plant breeding and genetics.

Experience
1/99 - present

Professor of Soil and Crop Sciences (7/05 - present)
Associate Professor of Soil and Crop Sciences (1/99 - 6/05)
Soil and Crop Sciences Department
Colorado State University

Serve as the project leader for the wheat breeding and genetics program. Major objectives of the breeding program include genetic improvement for grain yield, end-use quality (bread and Asian noodles), and biotic (Russian wheat aphid, fungal and viral pathogens) and abiotic stresses (heat and drought stress, winterhardiness) prevalent in Colorado and the central and southern Great Plains.

6/93 - 12/98

Associate Professor of Plant Science (7/97 - 12/98)
Assistant Professor of Plant Science (7/93 - 6/97)
Plant Science Department
South Dakota State University

Served as the project leader for the winter wheat breeding and genetics program. Conducted research on the genetic improvement of hard red and hard white winter wheat for production in South Dakota and the northern Great Plains. Coordinated development and release of three improved wheat cultivars (Tandem, Crimson, Harding). Taught two graduate-level courses in the plant breeding curriculum (Quantitative Genetics and Crop Breeding Techniques).

1/92 - 6/93

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Dry Edible Bean Breeding and Genetics
Department of Crop and Soil Sciences
Michigan State University

Developed strategies for identifying molecular markers linked to major disease resistance genes and utilizing such markers in marker-assisted selection. Identified RAPD markers linked to major bean rust and bean common mosaic virus resistance genes, enabling marker-assisted gene pyramiding within and between traditionally susceptible market classes.

6/86 - 12/91

Graduate Research Assistant, Winter Wheat Breeding and Genetics
Department of Agronomy
Colorado State University

Assembled a database of traits associated with drought stress tolerance in winter wheat germplasm. Developed early-generation selection schemes to improve postanthesis drought stress tolerance.

7/83 - 12/85

U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer/Assistant Cowpea Breeder
U.S. Peace Corps and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture/Semi-Arid Food Grain Research and Development (IITA/SAFGRAD)
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, West Africa

As a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, coordinated and supervised Striga (parasitic weed) resistance and drought stress tolerance components of national and international cowpea breeding program. Trained mid-level agricultural technicians from several African countries in field plot research and analysis techniques. Traveled throughout several west African countries. Became proficient in two languages, French (written and verbal) and More (verbal only).
